Carter (Rock Hudson), a stuffy executive for an oil company, meets Toni (Gina Lollobrigida), a Bohemian artist. The impulsive couple marry but soon find that they disagree on everything and soon separate. Five years later they meet on the eve of their divorce, and the impulsiveness returns, but the fighting continues. When Carter finds that he is up for a promotion and realizes that being married will be helpful in get the promotion, the fun really begins.
