College roommates in the 1940s, Jonathan and Sandy (Jack Nicholson and Art Garfunkel) are stuck in their emotional developments and do not seem able to move beyond physical relationships with women. They both compete for Susan (Candice Bergen), and Sandy marries her in what turns out to be an unsuccessful marriage. Ten years later, Jonathan is unhappily married to Bobbie (Ann-Margret). Now it is the 1960s, and Sandy is with hippie girlfriend Jennifer (Carol Kane), while Jonathan is again single. Sandy's question: "If you had the choice...would you rather love a girl or have her love you?" is still a puzzlement for both. The film made a name for Ann-Margret who won an Oscar nomination for her role as Bobbie.
