Mollie Truesdale (Jean Arthur) takes a break from her job in New York and goes on vacation in the West. She takes in a rodeo, and handsome cowboy Duke Hudkins (John Wayne) gets hurled into her lap by a bucking bronco. After the rodeo, Mollie misses her bus and is stranded. She shares a hotel room with Duke and his sidekick Waco (Charles Winninger) and falls in love with Duke. When Duke teaches Mollie frontier activities and tries to get her drunk, Mollie becomes upset and leaves. She heads back to New York, but Duke now realizes that he has fallen for Mollie and follows her to tell her that he loves her.
