After 20 years of marriage to Joe, he has died, and Arvilla (Jessica Lange) learns that because he never updated his will, Francine (Christine Baranski), who is Joe's daughter from his first marriage, will inherit their Pocatello, Idaho, home. Francine is willing to bargain. If Arvilla will deliver Joe's ashes to her, she will give the house to Arvilla. To settle the matter, Arvilla and her good friends Margene (Kathy Bates) and Carol (Joan Allen) join her on a car trip in Joe's 1966 red Pontiac Bonneville to deliver his ashes to Francine in Santa Barbara. And the adventure begins with many stops along the way–including a flat tire in Utah, hitchhiker Bo (Victor Rasuk) who is looking for the father he never knew, and truck driver Emmett (Tom Skerritt) who treats them to dinner in Las Vegas. The trip turns out to be much more than they expected, and, along the way, the women learn many new things about themselves.

| | Roland Emmerich Strikes Again! | 1fatts 04/13/2009 | It is perfectly justifiable not to like Roland Emmerich movies. He seems to believe that subtlety involves using only a two-ton sledgehammer instead of a ten-ton sledgehammer, when a tack hammer will do.
He does to "the monster movie" in Godzilla what he did to "the alien movie" in Indpendence Day and would later do to "the ecology movie" in The Day After Tomorrow." Good special effects; a plot that comes out of a blender; and dialogue written by a ten-year-old and spoken with deep commitment to the "Omigosh, Batman!" school of acting.
But that's the fun of the thing. If you want more, don't spend the money. If you want to watch things blow up or crash or crack or whatever which make no more demands of your wit or intelligence than a Hardy Boys book, you can have some fun. It's like Jackie Chan movies with better special effects and no sense of humour. |
