This is a romanticized version of the marriage of Clara and Robert Schumann (Katharine Hepburn and Paul Henreid) and her special friendship with Johannes Brahms (Robert Walker). Clara has given up her career as a concert pianist to support her struggling composer husband Robert and raise their seven children. After many disappointments, Robert dies in an asylum. Johannes Brahms asks Clara to marry him, but she turns him down and goes back on stage to play Robert's compositions and keep his memory alive.
