In this, the first in a series of Dr. Kildare stories, Janet (Barbara Stanwyck) is the widow of a bank robber and has been serving time for a crime she did not commit. Now, she is released from prison and searches for her kidnapped three-year-old daughter who is being held by Innes (Stanley Ridges) who wants money from Janet. While searching, Janet helps a young intern, Dr. Kildare (Joel McCrea), save the life of a thug, Hanlon (Lloyd Nolan). He offers Kildare money, but Kildare does not accept the offer. By story's end, it is Kildare who helps Janet find and retrieve her missing daughter.
