Set in 1910 Australia, this story revolves around young Alan Marshall (Alexander Outhred), a polio survivor who is not able to live an active life. Alan idolizes local horse trainer East Driscoll (Russell Crowe) and also has a crush on the beautiful, but married, Grace McAlister (Charlotte Rampling). When Driscoll and Grace enter into a romantic affair, Alan watches and lives vicariously through their actions.
