  Compulsive gamblers Bill Denny (George Segal) and Charlie Waters (Elliott Gould) become friends, and they gamble together. But, as they are leaving, they are beaten up, and the winnings are stolen. They spend the night at Charlie's house with Charlie's roommates, prostitutes Barbara (Ann Prentiss) and Susan (Gwen Welles). The next day, they sink into their worlds of booze, gambling, and sex, and, once again, their money is stolen. Bill sells his possessions to gamble on a big game in Reno. He wins but then leaves the casino and heads home after realizing that gambling may not be the way he wants to live his life, while Charlie remains behind believing that gambling IS his life.
