Vincent Bruce (Warren Beatty) is an occupational therapist in a mental hospital whose life is ruined when he becomes involved with a patient, Lilith (Jean Seberg). They begin a passionate affair, and then Vincent learns that Lilith is also having an affair with a woman (Anne Meacham). Meanwhile, another patient, Stephen (Peter Fonda), commits suicide because Lilith will not pay attention to him. When Vincent realizes that he is in danger of losing his own sanity, he seeks help from psychiatrists. But, will it be too late? This is Gene Hackman's film debut.
