"I'll be right back," Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) tells girlfriend Kelly (Helen Hunt). In the next scene, he survives his plane's crash landing and floats to a deserted island. Now, he enters a world with no clocks, no meetings, and no people. It represents the direct opposite of Noland's life as a FedEx executive. If he is to survive, Noland must fend for himself to obtain food, fire, and water. Survive he does, and Tom Hanks excels in carrying the storyline by himself through more than half of the film. Tom Hanks was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award.
