The story follows Caruso from his birth in Naples through his youth as a choir singer, then cabaret singer, and finally as an opera star at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City. Caruso falls in love with Dorothy (Ann Blyth), and, despite her father's (Carl Benton Reid) objections, they marry and live happily until Caruso dies when he is just 47 years old.

Now his friend Roger (Michael Rennie) introduces him to his sister Martha (also played by Ann Blyth) who looks just like Helen, and Peter and Martha instantly fall in love. This film begins in black and white, and then switches to color when Peter awakens in the 18th century.

After recovering from a drunken stupor, Clark races fellow seal hunter Portugee (Anthony Quinn) to Alaska, but they are both arrested by the Russians. In an effort to save them, Countess Marina says she will marry Semyon when he orders the release of Clark and Portugee.
