This Academy Award nominee from Russia for Best Foreign Film begins at the end of World War II when a young homeless woman, Katya (Yekaterina Rednikova), gives birth to a son who she names Sanya (which means the people of Russia). Six years later, Katya marries the stern, yet charming, Tolyan (Vladimir Mashkov), who Katya believes to be an army officer but is a common thief. The allegory is told through the eyes of Sanya (Misha Philipchuk) who has problems coping with Tolyan (who represents the thinking of Stalin).
