Charles (Michel Bouquet) has been enjoying an affair with the wife (Anna Douking) of his best friend, Francois (Francois Perier). But, during their sadomasochistic lovemaking, Charles kills his lover. When Charles' conscience gets the better of him, he confesses to both Francois and his own wife, Helene (Stephane Audran), who fail to react with dismay.
