  Eleven-year-old Vada (Anna Chlumsky) worries about her own responsibility for her mother's death during childbirth and reaches out for attention from her estranged father Harry (Dan Aykroyd) who runs a funeral parlor. When Harry starts dating Shelly (Jamie Lee Curtis), a cosmetologist who works in the funeral parlor, Vada tries to stop the romance. Meanwhile, her only friend Thomas (Macaulay Culkin) gives her comfort, but that ends when frail Thomas suffers a fatal injury after being attacked by bees. Now, Vada's preoccupation with death is accelerated. A sequel follows.

  In this sequel, Vada (Anna Chlumsky) is now13 years old. Her father Harry (Dan Aykroyd) has married Shelly (Jamie Lee Curtis), and they are expecting a baby. Vada decides to write a paper about the mother she never knew because she died while giving birth to Vada. Harry reluctantly gives her permission to go to L.A. and arranges for her to stay with Uncle Phil (Richard Masur) who lives with his girlfriend Rose (Christine Ebersole) and her son Nick (Austin O'Brien). Nick and Vada are close in age and, together, travel around L.A. finding information about Vada's mother. When Vada learns that Shelly is about to give birth, she returns home and, while saying goodbye, receives her first kiss–from Nick.
