  Originally a TV miniseries, this filmed version has been pared down by about an hour. A large asteroid is headed for Earth after being kicked out of its orbit by a comet. The asteroid could wipe out the entire population of Earth, so something must be done to destroy it. That something would be weapons fired at it, which does break it up into small pieces. The bad news is that the chunks all fall on Dallas, wreaking havoc. The last half of the film is concerned with the efforts of our heroes to save the people from the devastation.

When Rudy is killed by local bullies who set fire to their tree house with Rudy in it, each of the group deals with the tragedy in their own way. Timid Jacob, who is self-conscious because of a large birthmark on his face, visits the jailed boys who set the fire to find out their motivation despite the grievances of his parents. Malee becomes infatuated with a construction worker who is one of her psychotherapist mother's clients, and obese Leonard starts working out and dieting while encouraging his overweight mother to do the same. A good coming-of-age film on coping with tragedy. Fine sound track.

  In his effort to find out who made an assassination attempt on his father's life seven years before, ex-con Johnny (Denis Leary) abducts mob boss Frank Gavilan (Joe Mantegna). Johnny suspects that Frank might be behind the assassination attempt and uses the psychotherapy degree he earned in prison as the means of uncovering the assassin. He even takes Frank to sex therapist Dr. Diane Leah (Annabella Sciorra) as one of the steps in learning who attacked his father.

  After their children were killed in a car crash four years ago, Chris and Annie Nielsen's (Robin Williams and Annabella Sciorra) marriage was nearly destroyed. They have managed to work things out and are back together–until Chris is killed in a car accident. Spiritual guide Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.) helps Chris move on to the next world of Paradise where he sees his children (Josh Paddock and Jessica Brooks Grant) once again. Meanwhile, Annie's depression over her losses takes over, she commits suicide, and goes to Hell. With help from Albert and another guide, The Tracker (Max von Sydow), Chris ventures into Hell to save Annie from damnation.
