During the summer of 1979, young Joe Lamb's (Joel Courtney) mother has died, and he is suffering with his sheriff's deputy dad, Jackson (Kyle Chandler). One night, Joe and his friend Charles (Riley Griffiths) are working on a film project with their friends when Charles introduces Joe to Alice (Elle Fanning). As they head to a train station to make a super 8 movie, the kids witness a train crash, and they run for safety. But, something very strange escapes from the wreckage, and now, the city's dogs are fleeing, people are disappearing, loud noises are erupting, and soldiers are converging on their town. Joe and his friends investigate, but what will they find?
