Set in 19th-century St. Petersberg, this story revolves around Oblomov (Oleg Tabakov) who spends most of his time lazing around, dreaming of the past. His life changes after his friend Stoltz (Yuri Bogatyrov) introduces him to the lovely Olga (Yelena Solovey) who determines to change Oblomov into an action-oriented individual. In the process, they fall in love. But, where does Stoltz fit into this new picture?
