"Wait 'til next year!" is the cry of the Chicago Cubs, and Cubs manager Larry Fisher (Dan Hedaya) gets Henry to play for the Cubs hoping that Henry is just what Cubs owner Bob Carson (Eddie Bracken) needs to make the Cubs a winning team. With Henry pitching, the Cubs begin winning, and it looks like they are headed for the National Championships. Henry's family may be changing also when his mother Mary (Amy Morton) falls in love with injured Cubs player Chuck Steadman (Gary Busey).
