  This is the true story of Aron Ralston (James Franco), a mountain climber, who fights for survival after a boulder crashes on his arm, and he is trapped and alone in a canyon. During the next five days, Aron tries to free himself and finally resorts to cutting off his crushed hand. Now, he must climb a steep canyon wall and hike a long trail before receiving help. During his ordeal, Aron examines his life and, through flashbacks, recalls his family and friends–especially Megan (Amber Tamblyn) and Kristi (Kate Mara) who he had enjoyed a wonderful afternoon with shortly before the boulder came crashing down on him.

Forensic psychologist Lydie Crane (Tilda Swinton) is assigned to meet with Stephanie to determine whether or not she is telling the truth. During their sessions Lydie, who is pregnant, deals with her own guilt about a previous pregnancy that ended in a stillbirth as well as her confused feelings about the baby she is now carrying.
