Will just might make it possible for Charlotte's band to excel in the competition.

Teenager Olive Penderghast (Emma Stone) wants to be popular and uses the heroine, Hester Prynne from Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter," as her model. Olive makes up a story about a hot night of sex with a fictional boy and tells the tale to her best friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka). Word spreads about Olive's debauchery, and she welcomes the attention she is finally getting from her classmates. She stitches a scarlet "A" on her clothes and proudly enjoys her notoriety. He helps out classmate Brandon (Dan Byrd) and others by pretending to sleep with them. Matters peak when Jesus freak Marianne (Amanda Bynes) tries to get Olive kicked out of school, and Olive realizes that it might be too late to tell the truth.

Sara falls in love with Stephen (Cam Gigandet), and it interferes with Rebecca's dream of bonding with Sara. Rebecca becomes intensely possessive of Sara, which endangers Sara, Stephen, and Sara's friend Tracy (Alyson Michalka), and, when Rebecca believes that Sara is planning to move out, violence erupts.
