Sean MacArthur (Channing Tatum) leaves Alabama and moves to New York City where he ekes out a living selling counterfeit goods on the street. Con artist Harvey Boarden (Terrence Howard) enters Sean's life and offers him cash to fight in the illegal bare-knuckle circuit where wealthy men place wagers. Sean does well and wins all of his fights. But the intensity grows, and Harvey asks Shawn to throw a fight so that Harvey can make big money. Now, Shawn's future hangs on his decision.

Life isn't easy for Lower East Side teenager Victor Vargas (Victor Rasuk); he is supposed to fill the role of "man of the house" in the small tenement apartment where he lives with his younger brother, Nino (Silvestre Rasuk), sister Vickie (Krystal Rodriguez), and Grandma (Altagracia Guzman). When Victor falls in love with Judy (Judy Marte) who, in turn, shows no interest in Victor, he comes up with a plan: get Judy's brother, Carlos (Wilfree Vasquez), to help set him up with Judy and agree to set Carlos up with his own sister, Vickie.
