Dan and the girls head for a family reunion in Rhode Island, and after settling in Dan takes a break from the festivities and visits a local book store. While looking for a newspaper, Dan meets and is instantly attracted to Marie (Juliette Binoche). However, a few hours later Marie shows up at the reunion, and Dan learns that Marie is his brother Mitch's (Dane Cook) new girlfriend. Now, amidst awkward moments, the fun and suffering begin as Dan and Marie try to hide their attraction to each other.

Just as they get close to the needed evidence, "Hump" Hinton (Christopher Plummer) arrives on the scene ready to use any means available to get the bone samples for his own use.

  Harvey Milk (Sean Penn) was serving as a spokesman for the gay rights' movement when he was assassinated in 1978. This film involves the bigotry Milk experienced while organizing San Francisco's gay community to gain political clout and stand up for their rights. Milk is elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors and fights for the rights of not only the gay community but senior citizens and union workers as well and, in the process, gives hope to those in need. Among his problems is his continuing battle with another supervisor, Dan White (Josh Brolin). The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Penn) and was nominated for six other Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, and Supporting Actor (Josh Brolin).

The girls' lives change drastically when Mama announces that she is going to marry a man, Nick (Scott Bakula), whom they had not met. This doesn't go over well with the girls, especially Tilden, but that becomes less important when Mama finds out she has cancer.
