  Set during the era between 1890 and 1915, this is the film adaptation of Edna Ferber's epic novel about Yancey and Sabra Cravat (Glenn Ford and Maria Schell) homesteading in Oklahoma. They stake a claim, and Yancey starts a newspaper business that proves very profitable. Yancey gains respectability as a leading citizen and is asked to run for governor. But, Yancey realizes that becoming governor would mean he would play a role in defrauding the Indians of their land and mineral rights. He declines the offer, much to the dismay of Sabra.

Brad and Polly are in love, but Brad's wealthy family disapproves and will stop at nothing to break them up–but they fail, and the show goes on. Ginger Rogers sings "We're in the Money" while wearing only silver dollars in one of the great Busby Berkeley production numbers.

  As the country heads for the Great Depression in 1929, Tom and Ruth Holmes (Richard Barthelmess and Loretta Young) manage to cope with Tom's morphine addiction that he got while recuperating from an injury suffered during World War I. Tom is treated and released from an asylum and finds work at a laundry. He becomes friends with Max Brinker (Robert Barrat) who has invented a washing machine, and they form a partnership. Later, the machines put Tom and his coworkers out of business, which results in a riot during which Ruth is killed. By story's end, Tom has donated his fortune from the washing machine business to Mary (Aline MacMahon) so that she can feed the hungry during the Depression, and Tom is out roaming the streets looking for a job.
