Friends Stewart (Gabriel Byrne), Carl (John Howard), Rocco (Stelios Yiakmis), and Billy (Simon Stone) are enjoying a fishing trip near the town of Jindabyne in a remote part of Australia when they discover a young female Aborigine's body floating in the river. Instead of reporting their find immediately, they tie the body to a tree and continue their vacation. When they finally do notify the police, the situation of not reporting the death is met with scorn. Stewart's wife Claire (Laura Linney) is especially concerned, but when she tries to right the wrong, her actions are resented by both the White majorities and the Aborigines in the area.
