She tells him that she is a British spy being targeted by international agents out to kill her. The next morning, Annabelle appears at Richard's door–dying from a knife wound, muttering "39 steps," and giving Richard a map. Richard uses the map that leads him to Scotland. He meets Pamela (Madeleine Carroll) on the trip to Scotland, and she ends up serving as his assistant when the two of them become involved in a world of espionage and murder.

Despite Anna's protests, Keane calls her lover, stableman Andre Latour (Louis Jourdan), to the stand and tries to prove that he is the murderer. After being disgraced, Latour commits suicide. Finally, Anna admits that she killed her husband and blames Keane for Latour's death. The story ends with a stunned Keane leaving the courtroom. Ethel Barrymore received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress in her role as Lady Sophie Horfield, the judge's loony wife.

When Jessie's jewels are stolen, Frances steers the police in John's direction, but then the chemistry between Frances and John heats up, and love is definitely in the air. Now, Jessie is so much in love with John that she does not seem to care whether or not John is really a jewel thief.

Young Arnie (Jerry Mathers) discovers the corpse of Harry in a Vermont woods. He goes home and tells his mother (Shirley MacLaine) who recognizes Harry as her ex-husband and thinks she is responsible because she hit him with a bottle. Meanwhile, a hunter (Edmund Gwenn), also spots Harry and thinks he shot him while hunting. Others also believe they are the ones who are responsible for his death. To ensure that the authorities do not discover the body, the villagers get together and bury Harry. The trouble with Harry is that he is a corpse that just does not stay buried, and his body keeps popping up around town. Alfred Hitchcock, in a change for him, shows comic genius in directing this comedy. The film marks Shirley MacLaine's film debut.
