Chucky is six-year-old Andy Barclay's (Alex Vincent) new doll; however, Chucky is possessed by the soul of a dead murderer (Brad Dourif), which leads to the terrorization of Andy through Chucky's evil deeds. Murders take place, and when Andy tells people that Chucky did it, no one pays attention. Andy's mother Karen (Catherine Hicks) asks Detective Mike Norris (Chris Sarandon) to investigate. Because Mike is romantically interested in Karen, he agrees even though he does not believe Andy's stories–until Chucky starts to strangle him. Sequels follow.

After experiencing the terrors of Chucky (voice of Brad Dourif), Andy's mom suffered a nervous breakdown, and Andy (Alex Vincent) moves into the foster home of Phil and Joanne Simpson (Gerrit Graham and Jenny Agutter) who try to help him forget his previous terrors brought on by Chucky. Even though Andy "thinks" his evil doll, Chucky, is out of the way, Chucky tracks him down and puts his killer soul inside Andy's body, providing more terror and horror for the young boy.
