While Angus MacMorrow's (Alex Etel) father is off fighting in World War II, Angus walks along the shores of Loch Ness, finds an encrusted object, and brings it home. It turns out that the object is an egg that pops open to reveal a living creature with flippers, horns, and sharp teeth. Angus names it Crusoe. When Angus's mother (Emily Watson) hires a handyman, Lewis Mowbray (Ben Chaplin), Ben shows Lewis Crusoe. Lewis thinks Crusoe is a water horse, and the two take on the task of keeping Crusoe safe. But when Crusoe grows too big, Lewis and Ben release Crusoe into Loch Ness where Ben hopes he can still protect his pet–despite the fact that the British militia believes that Crusoe is a Nazi submarine.
