  Told through letters to a young Tanzanian orphan, recently retired and widowed Warren Schmidt's (Jack Nicholson) inner thoughts are revealed as he leaves in his Winnebago to perform one meaningful act in his now empty life. His mission: stop the impending marriage of his daughter Jeannie (Hope Davis) to Randall Hertzel (Dermot Mulroney), a man Warren can't stand. Once he arrives at the Hertzel home, Warren meets a family–including Roberta and Larry (Kathy Bates and Howard Hesseman)–unlike any he has ever known.   Suffering from failed professional and personal lives, former college roommates Miles (Paul Giamatti) and Jack (Thomas Haden Church) take a trip through California's wine country.
