Bobby Bowfinger (Steve Martin) is an unsuccessful movie producer who, in desperation, bets everything on "Chubby Rain" as the film that will finally make it big time. There is, of course, one major problem: the movie needs Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy) to star in it, but Ramsey is not interested. That does not stop Bowfinger. He uses a hidden camera to photograph the unsuspecting Ramsey talking to the film's actors. Even when Ramsey disappears, Bowfinger remains undaunted and searches for and finds a double to play Ramsey's "role."

The task is complete, and they head off to Iraq in a military transport plane. But, along the way they are napping in a Jeep and are ejected from the plane while it is flying over the Mexican desert. They believe they are in Iraq, fight what are really Mexican bandits, and end up heroes.

Whether or not he commits the actual murder doesn't matter; what counts is that he finds some personal redemption in the attempt. While this film may not be for everyone, both fine acting and superb directing work well together in this successful black comedy.
