John Farley (Seann William Scott) has written a best-selling, self-help book and comes home to receive the Corn Cob Key at his town's Cornival Festival. While visiting his widowed mom Beverly (Susan Sarandon), John learns that she is dating his nemesis during his school days: sadistic gym teacher Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton). John begs Beverly to not marry Mr. Woodcock, but she won't listen. He decides to extend his stay, and the battle of wits rages between John and Mr. Woodcock.
