The express office has been robbed, and Randy (John Wayne) rides into the town of Peyote Pass where he finds a saloon filled with dead bodies. Randy is falsely accused of the murders and is taken to jail. The saloon owner's niece, Sally Rogers (Alberta Vaughn), helps Randy escape so that he can find the real culprits. Randy finds the killers hiding in a cave with their leader Marvin Black (George "Gabby" Hayes) who poses as Peyote Pass shop-keeper Matt the Mute while plotting to take control of the town. Randy joins the gang members as part of his plan to bring them to justice.

Jim Wright (Hoot Gibson) captures a wild, magnificent "Devil Horse" that has a price on its head. But the horse is stolen by Gil Davis (Edmund Cobb), and Jim's buddy Skeeter (Skeeter Bill Robbins) is murdered in the process. Of course, Jim is suspected of the murder but comes through in the end.
