Waldo Trumbull (Vincent Price) runs the funeral parlor that his senile father-in-law Amos Hinchley (Boris Karloff) owns. The funeral parlor needs more customers if it is going to stay in business. Waldo's solution is to kill a few people whose services will then help pay the rent. Now, Waldo and his inept assistant Felix Gillie (Peter Lorre) start sneaking into homes at night and killing people. The plan works–but when they try, again and again, to poison Waldo's father-in-law, he just will not stay dead.

This remake of Tony Richardson's 1960 movie pales by comparison. This time around Jack Lemmon plays Archie Rice, a vaudeville entertainer of high expectations and little talent.
