In the midst of a blizzard, four prisoners–Beck (John Leguizamo), Smiley (Ja Rule), Anna (Aisha Hinds), and crime lord Marion Bishop (Laurence Fishburne)–are delivered to Precinct 13 in Detroit on New Year's Eve. A SWAT team is concerned that Bishop will testify against their chief Marcus Duvall (Gabriel Byrne), and the team arrives at the isolated police station plotting to destroy Duvall. Landlines are cut, and cell-phone channels are cut off. Inside the station, in an effort to survive, Sergeant Jake Roenick (Ethan Hawke) and his staff–Jasper O'Shea (Brian Dennehy) and Iris Ferry (Drea de Matteo)–are forced into becoming allies with the prisoners to fight off the assault.

But, Joshua has past ties to Candace and feels too close to her problems. He asks his fiance Linda Holmes (Ion Overman) to handle the case, and Candace heads to jail. Now in prison, Candace and Madea become friends, and Madea "protects" Candace in Madea's own unique way.

Mr. Brooks is the "Thumbprint Killer," and no one has suspected him, not even his wife (Marg Helgenberger). Then, he kills a couple and is spotted by Mr. Smith (Dane Cook) who now wants in on the action. Meanwhile, the tenacious police detective Tracy Atwood (Demi Moore)–who has her own share of personal problems involving not only her family but escaped psycho killer "Hangman" (Matt Schultze) as well–has spent years tracking down the "Thumbprint Killer" and is still on his trail.
