This is a very good remake of the Mark Twain classic as the innocent boy, Huck (Mickey Rooney), and runaway slave Jim (Rex Ingram) meet adventures and become friends as they raft down the Mississippi River. During their trip, Huck and Jim run into con-men "the King" (Walter Connolly) and "the Duke" (William Frawley) who impersonate royalty as part of their swindling schemes. True to Twain's story.

Huckleberry Finn   1974     2 stars    G, 118 min.
Genre: Musical
Director: J. Lee Thompson
Cast: Jeff East, Paul Winfield, Harvey Korman, David Wayne, Arthur O'Connell, Gary Merrill, Natalie Trundy, Lucille Benson, Ruby Leftwich

Mark Twain's story is hard to recognize in this musical version of the classic tale. East is Huck and Winfield is Jim and this film would be the last one to see if you want to see a Huck flick.

Huckleberry Finn   1975     3 stars    TV, 78 min.
Genre: Family
Director: Robert Totten
Cast: Ron Howard, Antonio Fargas, Jack Elam, Merle Haggard, Donny Most, Royal Dano, Dee Carroll, Rance Howard, Clint Howard, Jean Howard

This is a pretty good version of the Mark Twain classic tale. The Howard family plays many of the parts as Ron is Huck in this TV production. Fargas is the runaway slave Jim, as Huck and Jim raft down the Mississippi River. Most of the social bite of Twain's story is missing.
