Women's suffrage is the theme of this story set in the early part of the 20th century when American feminist Alice Paul (Hilary Swank) and social reformer Lucy Burns (Frances O'Connor) left the mainstream effort and formed a more radical wing fighting for women's right to vote. The title comes from Alice's fight against being force fed while on a hunger strike after being jailed with her suffragettes when they picketed the White House. While she showed courage, the real courage was that of the suffragettes as a whole whose efforts resulted in the ratification of the 19th Constitutional Amendment on July 26, 1920, giving women the right to vote.
