In this film adaptation of Edward Albee's Pulitzer Prize-winning play, a Connecticut family, Agnes and Tobias (Katherine Hepburn and Paul Scofield) find their lives are affected by one evening of unexpected guests arriving at their home. First, Agnes' alcoholic sister Claire (Kate Reid) stops to visit, and then their daughter Julia (Lee Remick) appears on the scene announcing that she is going through her fourth divorce. As if that was not enough, their best friends Harry and Edna (Joseph Cotten and Betsy Blair) come to visit, and it appears that they plan to stay forever. What has happened to their life of quiet domesticity?
