Robert Taylor plays the Roman warrior, Marcus Vinicius, who loves the beautiful Christian, Lygia (Deborah Kerr), but, at first, she wants nothing to do with a soldier. As time passes, Marcus converts to Christianity, and Lygia falls in love with him. Meanwhile, Nero's actions against the Christians becomes more violent as he burns Rome and then throws the Christians to the lions. Nero's former aide Petronius (Leo Genn) posthumously delivers the final insult to Nero. The film received eight Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture and two for Best Supporting Actor (Leo Genn and Peter Ustinov).

Charles Laughton is excellent in his role of the famed Dutch painter, Rembrandt. The film covers the last three decades of the painter's life during which he had three wives. After his first wife dies, Rembrandt marries his housekeeper Geertje (Gertrude Lawrence) but that doesn't work when he turns to his maid Hendrickje (Elsa Lanchester), and Geertje leaves him. Hendrickje becomes pregnant, and they marry, but she dies. However, during the decades covered in the story, Rembrandt paints some of his most creative work.

He escapes and heads to Earth with Kirk and Spock in pursuit to determine the man's real mission and to ensure history is not changed. "Spectre of the Gun" (aired 10/25/1968, stardate 4385.3)-The Enterprise is trespassing–according to the Melkots–on the Melkot's planet, and after Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Chekov are beamed down they are told that they will be punished. The Melkots can project any image they desire, so the punishment is to relive the gunfight at O.K. Corral–and the landing party crew members are the bad guys!

He claims to have been the only person on the planet, and then bad things happen when he is not pleased. "Balance of Terror" (aired 12/15/1966, stardate 1709)-The dastardly Romulans are attacking the outposts that guard the neutral zone between the Federation and Romulan territory. Now the Enterprise is in hot pursuit, but the Romulan warship has a screen that makes them invisible. In addition to the battle that is sure to ensue, the Romulans look a lot like Vulcans, which causes the Enterprise crew to be skeptical of Spock.

He had made a pact with the Poles to drive the Turks out of the European steppes but was betrayed when the Poles forced the Cossacks into the hills following the battle. Now, Taras Bulba has settled down to life on a farm when he decides to send his son Andrei (Tony Curtis) to school in Poland where he hopes Andrei will learn more about the hated Poles. While at school, Andrei falls in love with a Polish noblewoman, Natalia Dubrov (Christine Kaufmann). Tensions between father and son rise as each must decide between loyalty for the Cossacks and love. This story was filmed in England in 1939 as "The Rebel Son." An Academy Award nomination was received for Best Musical Score.

In the second story, "Rappaccini's Daughter," a demented father (Vincent Price) inoculates his daughter with a poison so that she will never leave him. Finally, in "The House of Seven Gables," Gerald Pyncheon (Vincent Price) returns home to search for a vault hidden in the estate–despite the fact that the vault contains a curse that has caused the deaths of Pyncheon men over the last 100 years.
