  Based on James Ellroy's novel about a real-life Los Angeles murder case when Elizabeth Short (Mia Kirshner) was brutally murdered and grotesquely mutilated, this film is fiction but uses details from the still unsolved 1947 case. Ex-boxers, now LAPD detectives Bucky Bleichert (Josh Hartnett) and Lee Blanchard (Aaron Eckhart) investigate the murder in their unique ways. Bucky dumps girlfriend Kay Lake (Scarlett Johansson) when he comes under the spell of the beautiful bisexual, Madeleine (Hilary Swank), who, it turns out, once slept with Elizabeth. Then there are the drugs and police corruption that enter the picture in this difficult case.

Just how far will Batman go to stop this dangerous criminal, and how far will The Joker go in his efforts to get rid of Batman? Ledger died of an accidental prescription drug overdose before the film was released. The film won two Academy Awards, including Best Actor (Ledger), and four other Academy Award nominations were received.

Based on a true story, there are good performances by all. Julia Roberts won an Oscar for Best Actress; nominations included Best Picture, Director Steven Soderbergh (who received an Oscar that year for "Traffic"), and Supporting Actor (Albert Finney, with his fifth nomination).
