 John Carpenter's directorial debut is a spoof of "2001." Four astronauts on a mission to blow up planets that are in the way of a proposed transportation route are bored and tired of the trip, having been out for 20 years. The Captain, Commander Powell (Joe Saunders) has died and is in a deep freeze, but the computer can use his brain for advice. Other than that, there are a lot of odd-ball goings on, even a "smart" bomb that may be too smart. The film was started when Carpenter was a student, and he expanded on it as funds became available. Unfortunately, not many funds came available, but it is still fun.

Her efforts to try to infiltrate the mob and find the murderer of Michael leads to an overabundance of violence.

 This is the third filming (the 1940 version was titled "His Girl Friday") of the Ben Hecht-Charles MacArthur play. When Walter Burns' (Walter Matthau) star reporter Hildy Johnson (Jack Lemmon) plans to leave the newspaper, marry Peggy Grant (Susan Sarandon), and move to New York, Burns tries everything he can to keep Hildy with the newspaper. He offers Hildy the job of writing a story about the planned execution of Earl Williams (Ausin Pendleton), and Hildy agrees. But, Williams escapes, appears in the press room, and Hildy hides Williams in a roll top desk. Now, as Hildy waits for the chance to interview Williams, he investigates, finds political corruption and the fact that they plan to execute the wrong man. (Again remade in 1988 as "Switching Channels."

The villain is Alonzo Hawk (Keenan Wynn), and he wants to build a skyscraper where Mrs. Steinmetz's house now stands. Hawk's nephew, Willoughby Whitfield (Ken Berry), falls in love with Nicole and provides legal aid in the fight against Hawk. Meanwhile, Herbie finds a different kind of aid when he leads all of the San Francisco Volkswagens in a battle against the bulldozers.

 Warden Hazen (Eddie Albert) wants a winning football team to represent his prison, and he knows just the person to assure his team of prison guards a victory. He chooses a prisoner who is an ex-pro football player Paul Crewe (Burt Reynolds). To achieve his goal, Warden Hazen makes a deal with Crewe and tells him that if he will put together a team of prisoners and agree to lose to the guards' football team led by Captain Knauer (Ed Lauter), then Crewe will be given parole. The challenge is on, and Crewe forms his team. As game time approaches, will Crewe accept the deal, or will the convicts achieve dignity as winners of the Penitentiary Bowl?

 In this film version of Patrick Dennis' novel–not to be confused with "Auntie Mame" (1958)–Lucille Ball is cast in the title role of Mame who during the 1930s' Depression Era enrolls her nephew Patrick (Kirby Furlong) in a private school and, with help from her friend Vera (Bea Arthur), tries to get into show business. Mame's financial problems are solved when she falls in love with and marries well-to-do Southerner Beauregard Jackson (Robert Preston) and goes to live with him on his plantation. Later, Beauregard dies, and Mame is left to contend with grown-up Patrick (now played by Bruce Davison), his girlfriend Gloria (Doria Cook-Nelson), and her bourgeoisie parents (Audrey Christie and Don Porter).

 Talk about bizarre! At age 75, Luis Bunuel still had the knack for innovative filmmaking. This surrealistic comedy is a collection of barely related sketches that include a group of patriots in the Napoleonic era egging on a firing squad to shoot them, a missing girl helping police fill out a missing person report on her, and the well-known scene of an elegantly dressed group sitting on toilets around a dinner table until hunger strikes, when they retire to stalls in a separate room to eat. And that's just a sample.

Now, with an aide in tow, the arrogant and proud captain tours Italy with the intent of seducing beautiful women, and, due to heightened senses, he can smell whether or not they ARE beautiful. At the end of his journey, he intends to commit suicide with a cadet "Cucchio" (Alessandro Momo) who was also blinded. Gassman won the Cannes Best Actor award, and the film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign film.

 This pilot for a TV series didn't bear fruit, nor did it deserve to. It is, however, worth a look if you are bored, as a loud and salty retired navy cook (Ernest Borgnine) operates a tug. Life on the waterfront sets the scene.
